What a challenging heat wave week it has been! But, in true GVPA, we battled through it and the children, staff and families, proudly demonstrated amazing resilience. Thank you parents for your support, not only carrying on as normal, but ensuring hats, extra drinks and sun cream were provided.
We cannot believe that this academic year is almost complete. Next week is the Fierte festival week titled 'Better Together.' Over the week, the children will be completing learning and experiencing new opportunities which promote the theme of "belonging." Please see the email that was shared today with the finer details for this.
Attendance to date is 94%. Please remember, our target is 96%. Every day is a learning day – every day attended matters!
Here are some highlights from the past two weeks.
Reception Maple
Daily, Reception Maple are showing Miss Matthews and Mrs Guild that they are ready to fly the nest and go across the corridor to Year 1. Their knowledge, skills, confidence and independence is wonderful!
Drawing Club and Literacy
Last week in Drawing Club we read Jack and The Beanstalk. Using the vocabulary ‘ginormous’, the children have drawn the giant’s secret treasure, Jack and the giant’s castle.
This week, we watched Wacky Races. Using the vocabulary ‘whizz’, the children have drawn Mutley, a new racetrack and a prize for the winner.
Reception are continuing to consolidate the writing and reading skills they have learnt throughout their time in reception. Miss Matthews and Mrs Guild are blown away by their eagerness to write both at school and at home.
Phonics and Reading in the Provision
Mathematics
In maths, we have finished our learning about maps, and we have enjoyed creating large-scale maps together on the carpet! Using small world and creative materials, we have made maps of a farm, a racetrack and our local area. We have also recapped our learning of subtraction, addition, and the concept of ‘before’. We have used number lines to help us. Reception Maple has also enjoyed completing some summer-themed building challenges with the cubes. Great work everyone!
Expressive Arts & Design
In Design and Technology, we have continued to practice our weaving skills. We have also designed out bookmarks, ready to sew them next week! Reception have also really enjoyed role play, with lots of children playing schools indoors, and shopkeepers outdoors.
Understanding of the World
To avoid the sun and stay cool, Reception Maple have accessed the outdoor provision in the cooler mornings but stayed inside during the hotter afternoons. They have been fabulous at staying in the shade as much as possible, and have loved having lots of water play!
Reception have been very excited about the World Cup! We split into reading groups and each group chose 6 teams. We’ve made lots of different flags to support the countries taking part.
Father's Day
Thank you for attending our Father’s Day assembly. The children had so much fun preparing the portraits and cards!
Year One Rowan
It has certainly been a hot few weeks, but the children have coped extremely well. We’ve found lots of creative ways to keep ourselves cool throughout the school day, and it has been lovely to see everyone still so engaged and enthusiastic in their learning. As always, the children have shown fantastic resilience and have adapted brilliantly to the warmer climate.
Literacy Tree
In English, we have been exploring the story Stanley’s Stick. The children used this as inspiration to write their own imaginative narratives, choosing a new object of their own. We have had boxes transformed into racing cars, rockets and trains! Their creativity has been wonderful to see, and they have used their imaginations brilliantly to produce some fantastic pieces of writing.

Phonics and Reading
In Phonics, we have now completed growing the code and are continuing to become more and more fluent readers. The children have been applying their phonetic knowledge to their spelling, particularly when adding the suffixes -ed and -ing. It has been wonderful to see their confidence grow.
History
In History, we have continued our learning about explorers. We learnt about Christopher Columbus and worked in small groups to act out his story—there are certainly some amazing actors in our class! We then sequenced the key events. We have also learnt about Matthew Henson, a famous Arctic explorer, using photographs as sources of information to discover more about his life and achievements.
Father's Day
Thank you Dad's for joining us last week. We hope that you enjoyed the challenges that the children chose for you to complete!
End of Year Whole School Trip
The children are incredibly excited about going to Twycross Zoo to visit the animals that they have been working hard to adopt through their positive behaviour and token donations.
GVPA was overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity that one of our families has given us in that they kindly made a large donation to ensure the full cost of the trip is covered, so goes ahead. This kindness does not go unnoticed, and we are truly thankful for covering the shortfall in payments.
Thank you again
School Parking
Walking, scootering and biking, many without stabilisers are in abundance, arriving at school in the morning. It is a joy to see and the children are so happy and proud!
If you need to drive to school, if possible, please park on Eagle Drive and avoid parking directly outside of school. This applies to when you attend an event such as the upcoming Sports Day.
Thank you in advance for your co-operation.
Fierte Multi-Academy Trust
Mrs Burke and Pip will be taking thirty dancers to the Fierte Festival next Saturday. Thank you Pip for your time, customising the T-shirts for the children. These will be distributed next week with hair and wrist ribbons.
The children and staff at Garden Village Primary Academy had a great day learning about numbers. The children played dominoes, played lots of counting games and even baked their own domino shortbread biscuits!
