This is our penultimate newsletter for our first year of opening at Garden Village Primary Academy.
The children at Garden Village continue to amaze the staff and visitors with their learning, behaviour, growing confidence and independence. The transition for Reception Maple moving into Year 1 has started, and it was a joy to welcome the new Reception starters and their parents last week during one of the stay and play sessions.
Our attendance to date continues to be something we are proud of: 95.5%.
With only three weeks left of this academic year, there are still so many opportunities planned for our children. We cannot wait to perform our modern dance on the stage at the Tamworth Festival on Saturday 5th July especially. Thank you to all the parents who have confirmed that their child can attend.

In Drawing Club last week, Reception Maple was highly inspired by the vintage cartoon Wacky Races. Using the vocabulary "whizz", the children really challenged themselves to write many sentences, some even starting to use conjunctions such as - 'and' and 'because'. The children designed and described a new prize for the winner. What do you think about our new designs for a vehicle for the race?
This week, the Drawing Club focus returned to a traditional tale - The Ugly Duckling. Using the vocabulary - glee - the children excitedly answered this challenge: Mummy Duck has come across another egg in her nest. What bird will hatch out this time?

Little Wandle - Phonics and Reading
In phonics, we are focussing on becoming fluent when reading our tricky words. The children are also making great progress reading words using suffixes: es, est, ed.
Look at our independent writing using our phonic knowledge!

In Mathematics, Reception Maple built on their knowledge of position to read, follow and design their own maps.

In the provision, we have been matching our number bonds to 10, challenging ourselves to be fluent when we recall!
We have also continued to extend our knowledge about patterns and shape.

'Forgiveness' and 'determination' are the virtues that the children have focussed on over the past two weeks.
Thank you Bev from Elim Church, for a wonderful assembly on Thursday when we learnt about Nehemiah and the Wall. Determined to complete the wall, for 52 days, Nehemiah remained resilient and with the help of his friends, successfully build the wall.

In music, we made our own instruments using junk modelling. Mrs Jennings helped the children to plan and make an instrument which they later used in their orchestra for a grand performance! We had drums, guitars, flutes to name only a few.

Collaborative Picture Building - Fierte Trust Visit
On Thursday 19th June, Mr Hand and Miss Bowers (Reception Class Teacher from Glascote) had a really positive morning in Reception Maple, observing the teaching and learning at Garden Village. It was a really positive morning, but a highlight for the Trust was talking to the children about their learning. We are immensely proud of how articulate, confident and fluent our children are when they speak about their reading and writing and other learning from the wider provision. Thank you, Mr Hand and Miss Bowers for your time and expertise.

This week, it was the very first Sports Day at GVPA. What a fabulous morning it was!
Every child participated with a big smile on their face. In their teams, the children participated in group races which included quoits, hoops, obstacles, space hoppers and even water!
Thank you parents for your continued support and feedback from the day.

Knowledge & Understanding of the World
This term, we are learning about 'change'. The children have chosen to focus on the seasons and animals to build on their previous learning. Linking to their knowledge of maps, the children have especially enjoyed finding the countries of the world where their chosen animals originated from. Miss Matthews even joined a live-streaming of the elephants in Ediburugh Zoo.

Expressive Arts and Physical Education
In the topic - Textiles/Bookmarks, the children have designed a bookmark and have also been busy learning how to weave and sew a running stitch in readiness for when they sew their own bookmark. Using their determination skills and resilience, the children know how to thread a needle and sew a simple straight line.
