Headteacher's Message

The children at Garden Village Primary Academy continue to shine and amaze us with their progress, manners and behaviour. As we head towards the end of the Spring Term, the children have so much learning to share and celebrate with you.  Last week, at the Local Governor's Committee meeting, it was such a privilege to share the progress and achievements to date of the children and school.

Reception Maple's attendance continues to be exemplary - 95%. Thank you parents for your commitment and support.

Drawing Club

Last week, Reception Maple participated in Shakespeare Week, which is an annual event providing opportunities for children to learn about the famous stories and plays written by William Shakespeare. This year, the children focussed on the text - A Midsummer Night's Dream. Our children enjoyed learning about the mischievous sprite called Puck, but their favourite character was called Bottom, who was half-man, half donkey! At GVPA, we turned the Forest School area into the enchanted woodland where we explored some of the vocabulary in the story, and we also made crowns so we could imitate being the King Athens or the Queen of fairies.

In Drawing Club, we drew and labelled the character Puck and also invented a new spell to cast.

Bananaman (TV series) - Wikipedia

In contrast, this week in Drawing Club, we watched a cartoon called 'Bananaman'. This was fondly enjoyed by the children and staff too! Using new vocabulary such as 'victorious', Reception Maple were inspired to produce some highly imaginative drawings and writing. The children invented a place to safely store Bananaman’s bananas from baddies and even answered this challenge: Banananman turns Dr Gloom into a baby! How will he cause mischief now?

Little Wandle - Phonics and Reading

In phonics and reading, so many children continue to progress by reading words and sentences fluently using their Phase 3 sounds. The weather has been super nice too, so Mrs Guild and Miss Matthews have completed the reading sessions outside in the sunshine in new outdoor seating areas.

Maths

In Mathematics, we have been learning about numbers to 20 and beyond! We are fantastically fluent at answering these questions: What number comes after x ? and what number comes before x? We also recalled our knowledge of number bonds up to 10 and ordering numbers to 20!

We have also really enjoyed using stores this week to support our mathematical understanding such as Anno’s Counting Book by Mitsumasa Anno and The Real Princess by Brenda Williams.

Anno's Counting Book: Anno, Mitsumasa, Anno, Mitsumasa: 9780690012873 ...

Character Education

To secure and deepen our understanding of the Spring Term virtues of 'patience' and 'respect', Mrs Burke revisited these values in her assemblies.

The focus of patience last week, explained the importance of not shouting out or interrupting when someone is talking. Bev, from the Elim Church, deepened our understanding of patience in her assembly; she explained how Joseph in the bible had to be patient when he was given his technicolour coat. As a result, we know how to wait and speak when someone is talking.

Respect is a virtue that is frequently reflected and praised by visitors to GVPA. Our kindness, friendliness and manners towards each other and adults are exemplary.

Physical Development

In gymnastics, we have been refining a variety of shapes, jumps, balances and rolls, linking them together to form a simple series of actions.

In multi-skills, we have been moving objects in a variety of ways.

Design and Technology

Last week, we learnt how to plan and select the correct resources needed to make a junk model. We also explored different ways of joining objects.

This week, our families kindly provided the resources from our plans which we then used to make our fantastic models, applying the different joining techniques that we had learnt. Miss Matthews and Mrs Guild were delighted with how independent we were!

Knowledge and Understanding of the World

GVPA's very own, hungry caterpillars! We cannot contain our excitement for the next phase of the life cycle!

Mother's Day

On Friday 28th April, Reception Maple had an extra-special friends and family celebration assembly. The Reception mums were treated to a song, a self-portrait painting and video message, a card, a daffodil and a biscuit. It was a very special assembly. Thank you to our parents for joining us.
