Headteacher's Message

The children at Garden Village Primary Academy continue to flourish daily in their own unique ways.

Last week, the Year One Class Teacher was successfully appointed for September 2025; we are busy resourcing the classroom in readiness for this.

Over the last four weeks, we have had the privilege of working with Mrs Newman from Two Rivers Primary. Thank you, Mrs Newman, for your support and kindness. The children and staff are going to miss you!

Our attendance continues to be great - 95%. Thank you parents for your commitment and support.

We hope you enjoy reading about some of the wonderful learning and experiences at GVPA.

Fierte Trust Pupil Leadership Representatives

We are delighted to present the Garden Village Pupil Leadership Representatives for 2024-2025.

On Thursday 20th March, Mrs Burke and Mrs Hand took the children to Manor Primary Academy for their first meeting with the other representatives from the other nine Fierte Multi-Academy Trust schools. We are so proud of the children who represented GVPA. We might be the youngest, but we had a great afternoon.

Drawing Club

Last week, the children enjoyed reading an unfamiliar book titled the 'Double-Decker Bus'. Using the new vocabulary - navigate - the children stretched their imagination skills to design a new deck for the bus. The designs and captions included a swimming pool with inflatables! The children were also highly creative in their plans for a new route for the bus.

This week in Drawing Club, Miss Matthews used the children's favourite stories 'Hansel & Gretel' to stimulate the writing.

The challenge word for the week was 'capture' and the writing challenges included creating a new 'Trick or treat? What’s in the pot?' The favourite challenge was - The witch wants a new pet spider, but she can’t choose which one. Can you help her choose?

Next week it is Shakespeare week and the text that we will be learning about is A Midsummer Night's Dream. We cannot wait to share our story-telling adventures with you about sprites, fairies, a donkey and a character named Puck! Here is a link if you would like to share and discuss the story in advance: CBeebies A Midsummer Night's Dream - CBeebies - BBC

Little Wandle - Phonics and Reading

Our phonics and reading continue to amaze our teachers. Our ability to decode longer words and read many words fluently gets stronger every day. Miss Matthews and Mrs Guild have been helping us daily to write the letters (graphemes) correctly and fluently too. Every morning before the register, we practise writing two letters on our whiteboards, saying the rhymes as we write. Again, we are making great writing progress!

Miss Matthews bought the children a pack of secret pens which they used to write and spell their high frequency and tricky words. Secret pens are so much fun!

The boys decided to teach their own phonic lesson in the continuous provision today.

Maths

In Mathematics, we have been learning to identify and make more complex patterns, e.g. AAB ABB. Miss Matthews and Mrs Guild have been asking us questions including: What do you notice?, What pattern can you see/hear?, Copy my pattern – what do you hear/see? How does the pattern continue? The children have acquired this knowledge so quickly and easily - they have been making patterns everywhere in the provision!

We have also extended our knowledge of 3D shapes. We can now describe the properties of the shapes by naming the shape of their faces, if they have curved or flat sides and corners.

Character Education

Last week, Mrs Burke set Reception Maple a new challenge as part of their Service in the Community virtue. In the Reception outdoor area, there is a wonderful 6-space planter in need of some life. Building on their new knowledge of growing plants, the children were asked to design and plan what they would like to grown. With a little help, as some ideas were rather imaginative, we decided to try to grow some herbs, flowers to help the butterflies and vegetables. Here are some of our designs and planting...

Expressive Art & Design

Using our noticing skills, Reception Maple observed and drew some incredible spring daffodils.

Knowledge and Understanding of the World

Last week, GVPA participated in National Science Week. The theme for the week was 'Change and Adapt'. During the week, we observed the bean and cress that we planted the week before, but to our delight, twelve rather hungry caterpillars arrived too! Using our observational skills and magnifying glasses, we have loved watching and talking about the changes in the caterpillars every day. We know the Hungry Caterpillar Story well, so we cannot wait for the next stage in their life-cycle.

GVPA's very own, hungry caterpillars!

One of the kind teachers who came for the Year One Class Teacher interview bought us some compost and sunflower seeds. We are now experts at planting! One of the boys said when he was planting that, in addition to the resources, you also need patience as the seeds will take time to grow. How incredible and factually correct this is! A great link to the 'patience' virtue.

The party hats were worn because the children had been learning about 3D shapes - cones. One of the girls made the link to her previous learning when they wore cone-shaped party hats that they wore when it was Pip's birthday... she insisted that the whole class wore them!

As part of our musical stories' topic, Mrs Burke helped us to use the percussion instruments to retell 'We're going on a Bear Hunt Story'. Listening to the story, thinking about the dynamics and pitch of the sounds, we performed the story brilliantly! This week, we applied this knowledge to everyday routines. In smaller groups, we rehearsed and performed using percussion instruments e.g. getting ready for school.

Comic Relief

Reception maple and OPOJ had so much fun raising money for the charity - Comic Relief. Whilst having fun, Miss Matthews also showed us how the money that we raised would be used to support other children.

Look at Pip's apron!
