The children and staff at Garden Village Primary Academy have had two more productive weeks. The children are now digging deeper into the curriculum and the learning outcomes are really impressive.
Sadly, we have had to say "ciao for now" to Mrs Jennings, who so kindly volunteered at GVPA. Mrs Jennings worked across the two classes, supporting the children with their learning; she was a wonderful role model to them. Wish you the very best, Mrs Jennings, for your move to America with your family!
Our attendance is again 95.6%. Your support in ensuring your child is at school and on time is much appreciated.
Reception Maple
Reception Maple are continuing to blossom in their learning, confidence and independence. Miss Matthews and Mrs Guild would like to share the following news with you:
Drawing Club
In Drawing Club last week, Miss Matthews shared a clip called ‘Bubbles’ from the original Magic Roundabout. We learnt what the word ‘greeting’ means, and we have been practising this when seeing our friends and visitors in the classroom. We drew Zebedee, Mr Rusty's house, and we invented the characters' a new bubble machine.
Drawing Club
This week in Drawing Club, linked to World Mental Health Day, we read the Colour Monster. This is a favourite of Reception Maple, and it is a great story to teach the children about their emotions. We learnt all about the word ‘tranquil’ and designed our very own Colour Monster!
Phonics & Reading
Thank you for the great attendance at the first Phonic and Early Reading workshop and to all the parents who have spoken to us about how best to support your child at home with phonics and reading. The children are making fantastic progress learning the weekly sounds and tricky words. Lots of children are also blending sounds to make words!
Mathematics
In Mathematics, we have enjoyed learning about measures and patterns. We have learnt how to use words such as smallest, longest, widest, repeating, and set. We've used this knowledge to measure classroom objects and create our own fabulous repeating patterns!
Art
We have had lots of fun with our Art and Design topic over the past couple of weeks! The children really enjoyed creating observational pictures of fruit and flowers – look how incredible they are! We've also learnt what a self-portrait is, and the children have used mirrors to draw themselves.
Personal, Social and Health Education
Our virtue this week has been co-operating. We've made sure to really practice this in the classroom, and the children have started to say 'teamwork makes the dream work!'. They have loved working together, especially on tricky jigsaw puzzles.
Year One Rowan
Mrs Stamp and Ms Rogers continue to be so proud of the children in Year One. Mrs Stamp would like to share the following news with you:
Phonics
In Phonics, we have continued with our amazing blending of longer words using the previously taught alternative graphemes including /ay/oy/ea/.
The tricky word recall is also quick and accurate.
Mrs Stamp and Miss Rogers are so impressed with how well we have learnt these!
Thank you again for attending the Phonic and Reading workshop and supporting your child at home.
Literacy Tree
In our Literacy, our text focus has been 'Cave Baby' by Julia Donaldson. We have been making predictions, using drama to act out the animals in the story, and writing sentences describing the animals in the story.
Science
In Science, we have continued to learn all about our senses. We have taste tested a range of food and used words such as sour and sweet to describe what they tasted like. We also had some mystery boxes where the children had to use their sense of touch to figure out what was inside ...the pumpkin felt so slimy!
Mathematics
In Maths, we have blown Mrs Stamp, Miss Rogers and Mrs Burke away with how quickly we have understood part-part whole. We have learnt how to use a 'part whole model' and a 'bar model' too. Year One, Rowan has been partitioning lots of numbers in various ways and can use double-sided counters to work out number bonds within 10 systematically.
I look forward to welcoming you to the Mathematics workshop on Wednesday 16th October at 6pm.
Art & Design
In Art, we have been using Paul Klee as our inspiration. We have been using his artwork to inspire us to draw our own abstract portraits. We have been learning all about organic shapes and deciding which shapes we will use in our portraits.
Computing
In Computing, we have been learning all about 'What is technology?'. We had to sort out objects and decide if it was technology or not. We were very good at this. Who knew a toilet was an example of technology!
Whole School Personal Development
Positive Behaviour Rewards
The Character Virtues that we have been developing in school over the last two weeks are 'kindness' and 'co-operation'.
Last Friday, it was wonderful to re-start the Friends and Family Celebration Assembly with the Year One parents. Rewarding the children for their achievements against the Character Virtues and seeing the tokens increasing in the charity boxes is wonderful to see.
World Mental Health Day
Friday 10th October, is World Mental Health Day.
Today, we have talked to the children about how important it is that we know who we can talk to if we are worried or upset about something. Also, the children had a lovely day learning some mindful techniques to regulate their emotions.
Parking before and after school
A huge thank-you again to our parents, friends and families who park respectfully before and after school.
It is so positive to see so many children walking, scootering and biking to school.
As a polite request, please can the children who take their bikes and scooters to school, walk them to the playground once they have entered the school building.

Fierte Multi-Academy Trust
The Fierte Trust Pupil Leadership Team decided that they would like to establish links with other children from across the Fierte Multi-Academy Trust. GVPA has been paired up with Glascote Primary Academy.
Today, Year One Rowan wrote a beautiful letter to their pen pals in Year One at Glascote Primary Academy telling them what they liked. It was so much fun, especially folding and putting them in envelopes. We are already excited about getting a reply!
The children and staff at Garden Village Primary Academy had a great day learning about numbers. The children played dominoes, played lots of counting games and even baked their own domino shortbread biscuits!
