RSHE and PSHE Intent – Garden Village Primary Academy
At Garden Village Primary Academy, our intent is to deliver a high-quality, statutory Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) curriculum from September 2026 that equips all pupils with the knowledge, skills and values they need to lead safe, healthy and fulfilling lives, both now and in the future.
In line with the updated statutory framework, our curriculum is carefully designed to promote pupils’ personal development, emotional well-being and understanding of healthy relationships. We recognise that effective RSHE is fundamental to safeguarding and underpins our commitment to ensuring that all children feel safe, respected and confident to seek support when needed.
To achieve this, we have adopted the Kapow RSE & PSHE scheme, a carefully sequenced and progressive programme from EYFS through to Year 6. The curriculum follows a spiral model, enabling pupils to revisit key concepts over time, deepening their understanding in an age-appropriate and meaningful way. This ensures that knowledge is securely embedded and responsive to the developmental needs of our pupils.
Our curriculum is organised into nine key areas:
- My healthy self
- Connecting with others
- The online world
- Staying safe
- Health protection
- Growing up
- Citizenship
- Sex education (Year 6)
Through these themes, pupils develop a strong understanding of how to form positive relationships, keep themselves safe both offline and online, and make informed decisions about their health and well-being. The curriculum is inclusive and reflects our school’s values of respect, kindness and individuality, ensuring that learning is relevant to all pupils.
We place equal importance on supporting staff confidence and subject knowledge, ensuring that lessons are delivered with clarity, sensitivity and accuracy. This enables consistent, high-quality teaching that supports open dialogue and fosters a safe learning environment where pupils feel comfortable to ask questions and express their views.
